Call me Edward Cullen, but watching people sleep is fascinating.
Not that I make the point of deliberately doing so, but you know when you’re just enjoying silence with someone, and you’re deeply indulged in your own head-space. Then you look over at the other person, just to see what they’re up to, and the find them asleep.
Or perhaps you were sleeping in the same bed and you wake up first to find them still wrapped in sleep, indulged in their dream world.
It’s just the undisturbed peace on their face. How youthful and innocent they look. Even the most intimidating and authoritative person becomes so unguarded and just so human in this time. And perhaps it’s just my awkwardness talking, but I always find watching them so intense, like you shouldn’t look for too long, just like you shouldn’t stare when they’re awake. Or that perhaps they’ll know, or wake purely from your leering. Regardless, you can’t tear your eyes from their sedated state.
It always feels strangely intimate too. Something you shouldn’t see. A secret. When sleeping they’re stripped naked of their pretenses and any facades they like to hold whilst conscious, so you get to see them in a new and revealing light.
Even stranger can be when they stir. Their face shifts uncomfortably at a dream or the slightest of murmurs escapes their lips as they interact in their sleeping world. They fidget or turn.
It’s all just sort of beautiful and one of those things about people that if you stop to think about, that you really can appreciate.
